Joan Peterson, age 64, missionary in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, passed into the loving arms of Jesus, on November 10, 2021, surrounded by family and friends.
Joan grew up in St. Paul, but it wasn’t long before her missionary work led her to travel the world. When she was 18, her family moved to Indiana and she attended Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI for short). She obtained her nursing degree and flourished while working in the neonatal ICU with mothers and babies. In her spare time, Joan enjoyed playing her violin and spending time with her friends. After school, her missionary work called her to Africa, where she worked for decades in community development. She learned a new style of nursing and adapted her skills to provide practical education to the many communities she served. When Joan was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer, she continued to maintain her independent spirit until the very end. Joan is survived by her loving parents, Richard and Donna; siblings, David (Rhonda) and Dale (Amy); 8 nieces and nephews; 16 great-nieces and nephews; and many friends both here and in Africa. She is welcomed by her grandparents who preceded her in death.
Joan’s steadfast commitment to her faith and community development will continue to be felt by all who knew her. Donations preferred to West African Development Ministries (WADM). Mailing address: P.O. Box 10936, St. Paul, MN 55110.
A Celebration of Life for Joan will be held at 11AM, on November 22, 2021, at Bradshaw (4600 Greenhaven Drive). Family and friends may visit one hour prior.
