Alex Jared (AJ) Zimmerman, was born on November 1, 2002, and returned to God's loving arms on Sunday, February 16th, 2025, at 7:50 PM. Forever 22 and far too young, AJ was guided into Heaven while in the tender and loving embrace of his parents, Tyler and Anne, his brother Riley, sister Lauren, and beloved pup Jovie. He was at home, where he wanted to be, surrounded by the immense love of his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
AJ's passing came after a courageous two and a half-year battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Though the disease slowly and ruthlessly took its toll on his body, it could never defeat his unwavering spirit or his fierce determination to live. AJ was a young man of strength, resilience, and an infectious love of life.
A proud graduate of Mahtomedi High School's Class of 2021, AJ was known for his enthusiasm for life and his love of sports, especially hockey and golf. He was a passionate Minnesota Wild fan and a frustrated Vikings supporter. His zest for adventure led him to Colorado, where he worked at Breckenridge Ski Resort during a remission from the disease. There he was able to embrace life and live on his terms while marveling the mountains and honing his snowboarding skills. AJ also enjoyed fishing, jet skiing, trail riding, and playing knee hockey with his cousins. His time at the family cabin in Spooner, Wisconsin was a cherished retreat where he created many treasured memories with family and friends.
AJ's family is eternally grateful to the dedicated team of doctors, specialists, nurses, and staff at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. Their expertise and compassion guided him through his journey, as well as the holistic practitioners who provided care and hope during his battle. We also extend our gratitude to the congregation of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, the Mahtomedi community, and all who supported AJ through his journey, including the Cancer Connect Group, Pastors, and the countless family members and friends who stood by his side. Special thanks go to his best friends, Ayden Casas and Mike Rosario, who exemplified the true meaning of heartfelt friendship.
AJ's life will be celebrated with a funeral service at 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 6th, 2025, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, located at 900 Stillwater Road, Mahtomedi, MN 55115. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM. Following the service, all are invited to join us at 7 Vines Vineyard, located at 101 Hwy 96 E, Dellwood, MN 55110, for a Celebration of Life event in AJ's honor.
Though AJ's physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit will forever uplift us. His memory will continue to inspire us all, and we will carry forth his legacy of love, compassion, and resilience in everything we do.
In lieu of flowers, AJ would love donations to be made in support of the children and families on the 4th floor of Masonic Children's Hospital who continue to battle difficult diseases. Donations can be directed to the Pinky Swear Foundation, which provides food, snacks, and support for patients and their families during treatment.
May AJ's spirit live on in our hearts and his legacy of kindness and love guide us forever.
