HANRAHAN
Ann Marie
Age 58, of Lake Elmo
Passed away March 23, 2017, surrounded by loved ones, at home and at peace.
She is sadly missed by a large and loving circle of friends and family including her husband, David Prince of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, and her son, Matthew Connor Hanrahan and his girlfriend Jamie Witten of Minneapolis; her stepson Michael Prince, his wife Hannah and their daughter Charlotte of Bellevue, WA; her stepson Peter Prince, his wife Gabrielle Longobardi, and their daughter Penelope Prince of Brooklyn, NY; parents, Robert and Mary Ellen Hanrahan of Gainesville, FL; her sister Sheila Hanrahan Gibson, her husband Tom, and their children James and Grace of Gainesville and Tampa, FL; her brother Robert Hanrahan, Jr., and his wife Margie Foster of Gaithersburg, MD; and her sister Pegeen Hanrahan and husband Tony Malone, and their children Evyleen, Quinn and Tess, of Gainesville. Her Labradoodle, Gibson, also misses her very much.
Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Ann Marie moved when a few weeks old to Gainesville, Florida, where she grew up. After graduation from the University of Florida in 1981, she continued to work as a laboratory assistant in an entomology lab at the University of Florida's USDA research station, experience that would later serve her well in her legal career. In the early to mid 1980's, Ann Marie trained with the Gator Track Club, winning many road races and taking second in her age range in the Gainesville Marathon to qualify for the Boston Marathon, which she also finished competitively. She attended law school at the University of Wisconsin where she excelled, graduated in 1988 with several academic honors, and then began practicing law at Faegre & Benson where, as a young single mother, she became a partner before moving in 2001 to the General Counsel's office at 3M where she became Vice President and Associate General Counsel for Litigation and Preventive Law and the company's first Director of Corporate Compliance.
Her work made her known across the country and beyond as a very accomplished lawyer. She was immensely proud to be a lawyer and took the responsibilities of her profession very seriously, not only in the work she did for her clients, but through the volunteer work she did in the community including pro bono legal work for disadvantaged children and teenagers and on death penalty cases. Active in many community activities, she brought her characteristic energy, dedication, and leadership skills to all of her endeavors including her service on boards of community service organizations whose work she cared a lot about such as East Side Neighborhood Services and the Children's Law Center of Minnesota.
Much of her work for others was largely hidden from view because she was a very private person and very modest, made uncomfortable by attention. She was happy to brag about, and quick to credit, others - her husband, her son and the rest of her family, her friends, her co-workers - but she never bragged about herself. She did nothing by half-measures. Everything worth doing was worth doing as well as possible. As a young woman she was an accomplished ballet dancer, played concert violin and viola, and was a fine artist as well. Though a lawyer by profession, she was an artist at heart and a great supporter of the arts, most recently as a member of the Board of Directors of the Guthrie Theater where she threw herself into that work with her characteristic energy, commitment and care. She and her husband also travelled extensively to pursue their love of art, architecture, food, wine, the outdoors, and learning the cultures of other people and places.
This remarkable woman of enormous character meant many important things to many people. She was smart, talented, hard working, fiercely determined, sometimes defiant and with an Irish temper, a formidable advocate, and a friend, supporter and mentor to many, especially younger women in her profession. Above all, she was the embodiment of kindness and caring, a loving wife and mother, a great step-mom, sister, daughter, and grandma Cookie to Penelope and Charlotte, and a friend to many.
Those who knew her well, know that those angels who sometimes wonder how to be a better angel, no longer have to wonder. Now they have Ann Marie to show them how it's done.
