Betty Jo Shawang, of St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away May 31, 2018. A private family interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Memorials preferred to the charity of the donor's choice.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Peter; and her four babies, Susan, Sandy, Scott, and Shawn, all of whom died at birth. Betty was the last living member of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Betty received man honors: Valentine Queen from 3 organizations, twice Beta Sigma Phi woman of the year, Christian Women's Club High Honor, as well as the St. Paul Winter Carnival Award for Outstanding and Faithful Service. Betty was a member of the St. Paul Winter Carnival Queen's Court 3 times, and was a Life Member of the St. Paul Winter Carnival Association. She was a member of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, Beta Sigma Phi, and Alpha Delta Pi sororities.
Betty was a lettered swimmer. A baby boy's teenage parents were tossing him back and forth in the deep end of the pool, and dropped him and froze. Fortunately, Betty dove down and rescued the boy. The child, named David, went on to live a full life.
Betty's two favorite "things to do" were volunteering and entertaining. She enjoyed accompanying herself on the portable electric organ, and was always ready and willing to lead "sing alongs". Betty volunteered at the Presbyterian Home, and assisted stroke victims in pool therapy. Unfortunately, the chemicals in the pool caught up with her skin, causing rash, pain, and itching, forcing her to quit.
She was a high school cheer leader and loved buying batons and pom-poms, teaching kids how to be cheer leaders.
Over the years, Betty was a hair model and for over 40 years, nearly up to the time of her death, modeled clothes in style shows for the clubs she belonged to
Betty loved cooking, baking, and shopping. She won numerous ribbons for her cookies. Betty was generous to a fault, could be trusted, and always found good in people. She will really be missed Life will never be the same without her. Those of us whose lives she touched were truly blessed.
Rest in peace gentle soul, you will never be forgotten...
