Birger Jorulf Hammer
Age 90, of Maplewood, MN. Died peacefully on January 7, 2023. Son of Svein and Solveig Hammer. Survived by children Anne (Nate) Hill, John (Dianne), and Tina, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Born in Høylandet, Norway, on April 19, 1932. Birger married Tordis Haugum (who preceded him in death) in Olso, Norway, on August 19, 1958, and, that same day, they boarded a ship for the U.S. where Birger studied mechanical engineering at Michigan Tech. He was hired by 3M after graduation in 1960, and they moved to MN and eventually settled in the Tri Lakes Area of Lake Elmo, where he was an active community member for decades. Birger was celebrated for his contributions in 3M’s traffic and safety products and received the Engineering Achievement Award. He enjoyed skiing, nature and bird watching (and shared that love with his children) and also enjoyed photography, traveling, the Norske Torske Klubben, reading books and maps, and music. Birger joined the loving memory care community at Ecumen Lakeview Commons in 2019. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his woodworking craftsmanship, his quiet curiosity, and his capacity to look after others, which stayed a part of his personality even after significant memory loss due to advanced Alzheimer’s.
