Thompson, C. Diane

Stillwater Historian

_______________

Constance Diane Thompson loved the Stillwater Area and, most importantly, the people who live here. Her life was punctuated by volunteerism and outstanding compassion for the people near and far from her. She was always willing to lend a hand and tell a story. Most notably, she will be remembered as a loving and caring mother and grandmother, her numerous philanthropic endeavors and her pivotal role in the rebirth of Stillwater's most notorious celebration: Lumber Jack Days.

Diane, as she was known, born March 3, 1931, moved to Stillwater from North Dakota for a nursing internship from the University of North Dakota in 1953, only to find love and friendship in addition to her nursing experience. In 1954, she married her late husband, Robert (Bob), and started a new life filled with joy, stories, and many, many people whom she loved and adored. Diane fulfilled herself through volunteerism and helping the community in any way she could. In addition ,she was an active church member with the 1st Presbyterian Church of Stillwater as a Sunday School Teacher and choir director, member of Presbyterian Women, and served as a Deacon and in other service offices. Lifetime board member with the United Way, a private piano teacher, Lions Club member, and an avid historian for Stillwater: authoring books, writing and collecting newspaper articles, photos, and other memorabilia pertaining to local history and, specifically, Lumber Jack Days as well as the local lumber era in addition to narrating tours of Stillwater with Valley Tours.

After an extended battle with cancer, Diane passed away on the morning of March 12th just 9 days after the celebration of her 80th birthday. For this celebration, loved ones surrounded her and she retold many of the stories of her life. Her late husband, Robert Thompson; brother, Gary Miller of North Dakota and her parents precede her in death. She is survived by her son, Brooks Thompson; daughter, Cindy Thompson; grandchildren, Mitch (and wife, Rebekah) of Los Angeles, CA, Grant of Stillwater,MN and Brett of St. Paul, MN. She will be greatly missed by her many friends as well.
