Carole Gilmore Winslow passed away early on Monday, the 23rd of August after a short battle with epilepsy. Carole was born on April, 22 1940 and was raised in the Lake Wobegon-like town of Freeborn, MN, where her father was the town grocer. Her children loved to listen to all of the quaint, small-town stories that she would tell.
She graduated from Winona State University in 1962 with a degree in Elementary Education. She didn’t teach very long, but instead raised her 3 children and worked part time at the St. Croix Drug Store for many years.
She married Louis Winslow on August 4th, 1963. She liked to say that she married the prom king, as Louie was the prom king his junior year in Caledonia, MN. They spent most of their married life in the same house in Stillwater, MN, where they raised their children, Johnny, Miles and Katherine.
The family loved to travel and we all have many wonderful memories of vacations out West. The family spent many years back packing in the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming, where Carole could hike with a big pack as well as her husband and children could. In their retirement years, Carole and Louie would travel the world from Europe to South America to Australia.
Carole is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Louis, who spent the last few years lovingly taking care of Carole as she slowly was overtaken by dementia. She is also survived by her son, Miles; daughter, Katherine (Gary) Duehr; four granddaughters, Victoria, Gabby, Ariana and Sophie; and three grandsons, Jonathan, Matthew and Sammy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Alice Gilmore; her younger sister, Ruthie Short; her eldest son, Johnny Winslow; and Johnny’s baby son, Bennet.
Memorial service will be 11am Friday, April 22 at FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 6201 N Osgood, Stillwater, with visitation one hour prior. Livestream available at:
