Daniel “Dan” Whalen

A very loving husband, brother and uncle, Dan passed away peacefully on August 10, 2021.  He fought an incredibly courageous battle with Leukemia and was home for hospice care his final 2 weeks, surrounded by family and close friends. He will be sorely missed by his loving wife, Susan.  He is also survived by brothers, Tim (Mona), Kevin (Michele), Brian (Pam), Neil (Kathy); sisters, Colleen (Scott) Dennison, Mary Whalen, Sheila (Todd) Zimprich; ‘honorary’ brother, Brian Brommel; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius “Con” and Kathleen Whalen.

Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, Dan spent his formative years in Grand Forks, ND.  After obtaining a graduate degree from UND, he began a 37-year career with 3M, retiring in 2015.  He loved working for 3M and also participated in many 3M leagues, including softball, kittenball, volleyball and tennis.  Tennis was his passion, and he loved his many tennis friends, teams and tournaments.  He also enjoyed ski trips and cruises with friends, attending concerts and sporting events.  He and Susan enjoyed traveling and especially loved their Olympics trips.

Most important, Dan was a family man.  He married his ‘soul-mate’ Susan in 1990 and they enjoyed their home in Stillwater, often entertaining with Christmas parties, pool parties and family reunions.  He especially loved their gardens and riding around on his John Deere tractor.  He also enjoyed putting many family videos together.

Those that knew Dan will remember him as a fun-loving, positive person and he remained that way throughout.  He always gave so much of himself in order to make life better for others.  His kindness will NEVER be forgotten!

A Celebration of Dan's Life will take place on Sept. 11th, 2021 at 3:00 pm with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service at Bradshaw Celebration of Life, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., Stillwater, MN 55082
