Daryl Zimmer, 76, of Houlton, WI and Hereford, AZ died tragically in a motorcycle accident near Sonoita, Arizona on Monday, April 8.
Daryl, the 5th of five children, was born and raised in Waite Park, Minnesota and graduated from Cathedral High School, St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1961. He attended college at St. John's University, Collegeville, MN graduating in 1965 with an education degree in English and taught in Monticello, MN for two years. In 1967 he joined the US Army Reserve and when finished he began working at Honeywell in Minneapolis in their publications department. While working there he attended William Mitchell Law School in St. Paul, Minnesota graduating with a JD degree in 1975. He continued to work at Honeywell in the legal department in various capacities and in 1991 became the General Counsel of Alliant Techsystems, a spinoff from Honeywell. He continued in that role until retirement in 2001.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Francis and Viola Knese Zimmer, brother-in-law, Peter Doroff, brother, Donald and sister-in-law Sabina Zimmer, brother-in-law, Ervin Vos and sister-in-law, Charlotte Zimmer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonnie Chelstrom Zimmer, sister, Valeria Doroff of Waite Park, MN, brother Dennis and wife, Karen, of Sun Lakes AZ, sister Joan of Waite Park and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Daryl had numerous interests and talents but also took great joy in the little things life offered. He loved to read (drawn to sci-fi), garden, fish, boat, travel, and spend time with family and friends. He enjoyed riding motorcycle especially with his "gang", the Lutherans in Leather.
Many people benefited from Daryl's generous spirit and willingness to guide and mentor throughout his personal and professional life. Bonnie and Daryl were renowned for their beloved gifts of hospitality.
A neighborhood celebration of life was held at his home in Hereford, AZ, Saturday April 13. A memorial service will be held at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd, Stillwater, MN Tuesday, April 30. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m with the service at 2 p.m. officiated by The Rev. Becca Wold Freeman. Reception following at the JX Event Center, 123 2nd St N, Stillwater, MN from 3-6 p.m.
