A memorial celebration for David Leigh Ayers, age 67, of Stillwater, will be held Friday, October 1, 2004 at 4:00 P.M. at BRADSAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 2800 Curve Crest Boulevard (NW corner of Hwy 36 and Co Rd 5), Stillwater.
David passed away quietly in the company of family and friends on August 30, 2004 of complications related to Diabetes and Parkinson?s Disease.
After surviving polio as a child, Mr. Ayers and his passion for the outdoors ? hunting, fishing, cycling and running ? were challenged by the onset of Parkinson?s over 20 years ago. His effort to best this neurological demon was a wonder to those who knew him ? spending countless hours fashioning contraptions to aid and perpetuate his self-reliance, rigging his bicycle to ensure the cooperation of his feet, and scuba diving long after it was medically advisable. His great will, humor and sensitivity were an inspiration and are deeply missed.
Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by father, Earl H. Ayers, and mother, Josephine K. Ayers (Lescarbeau) of Stillwater. Survived by his former wife and lifelong friend, Carol Johnson (Robbins); children, David K. Ayers (Ambrosia), Denise R.W. Ayers (Michael), Douglas L. Ayers (Lisa), Julie K. Ayers (Max); brothers, Bradley E. Ayers, Michael J. Ayers (January), Joseph D. Ayers (Joan); fifteen grandchildren/step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; many nieces, nephews and loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed in his name to the Parkinson?s Foundation, American Diabetes Association, or Lakeview Hospice.
