David Eugene Meis
David Eugene Meis died peacefully on January 11, 2024, in Chaska, Minnesota.
David was born on February 7, 1995, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Robert and Holly (Borchart) Meis. David attended Sioux City schools until moving to the Minneapolis area upon graduation. David attended Minnesota Community and Technical College and then the University of Minnesota where he earned his undergraduate and masters degrees in Theater Education. It is there where he met his loving girlfriend, Kayla, with whom he planned to share his life.
While going to school, David had several jobs but his favorite was at Wagging Tails, where he developed a love for dogs. After graduation, David taught theater to middle school students at the Twin Cities German Immersion School. David dearly loved the school, its faculty and staff, and most of all his amazing students. He felt strongly and often spoke passionately about creating a better, more equitable education system for both teachers and students.
Theater was David's passion from an early age. He appeared in many productions at West High School, Lamb Theatre, under the tutelage of Diana and Russ Wooley in Sioux City, and Minnesota Community Technical College. He had the uncanny ability of bringing the incredible experience of live theater to his audience by taking on an eclectic array of acting roles from the intensity of Columbinus to an endearing performance in The Christmas Carol. He left the audience in stitches with a hilarious performance as the Young Fool singing the song "Arkansas/How Blest We Are" in the musical, Big River. But perhaps his best and most moving role was Toby in a production of Sweeney Todd.
David enjoyed the outdoors and spending time in the north Minnesota woods with friends that he developed an incredible bond with while living in Minneapolis. David was a kind, generous, and gentle soul who loved spending time with family, especially his parents, and was adored by his nieces and nephew. David was a friend of Bill W. and helped countless others in recovery.
David is survived by his grandmother, Nadine Meis; his girlfriend, Kayla Albers; his parents, Bob and Holly; his brother, Brian (Heidi); sisters Lauren (Lucas) Judd, and Kathleen (Zach) Heis; his nephew Kingston Shuberg and his nieces Charlie Joan and Meru G. Meis; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
David was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. Donald and Theresa Meis, and Dr. Eugene and Gaile Borchart; and his beloved uncle, Bradley Bawmann.
David made the world a better place. Our memories are richer because of him and our lives are better because he was a part of us. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Memorials may be made in David's honor to Lamb Theatre, 417 Market Street, Sioux City, IA 51103.
