Peacefully passed into eternity surrounded by his family on October 4, 2020. Born, November 6, 1950 to Norris and Lois Shegstad in Minneapolis, MN.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim; and grandson, Ezra.
He is survived by wife, Cindy; daughters, Meagan Shegstad, Ellyn Failor (Jeremy), Lauren Shegstad, and Katelyn Poferl (Isaac); grandchildren, Jesse, Colton, Coralyn, and Ruby; sister, Sandra Gertz (Rick); and brother, William (Barbara).
He attended Roosevelt HS and Minneapolis Technical School. He served 9 years in the Army National Guard while caring for his father and working to maintain the family’s welding & boiler business until his father’s death. David truly enjoyed self-employment and established his own business, NC Shegstad and Sons, at the age of 24. He gradually developed his welding trade into an ornamental iron fabricating business which his family will continue to carry on to honor their father & grandfather. He married his wife, Cindy, on June 9th, 1978, after a brief 2-month courtship. He said the moment he laid eyes on her; he knew he would marry her. They shared 42 loving years together.
David loved helping family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. It meant a great deal to him if he could provide a helping hand, and would often assist strangers with whatever their need may be in that moment, never expecting anything in return. He enjoyed long motorcycle rides that took him across the country and allowed him to view the greatness of God’s creation. Spending time with his family and videotaping the simple moments and adventures they shared was extremely important to him, and he enjoyed viewing them over the years.
His church home since its conception in 1984, Living Word Lutheran Church in Eagan, MN, was his place of refuge and he had the honor of serving as an elder for a congregation he dearly loved. The family cabin was his favorite earthly home and being out on the lake was his place of rest. His family was the apple of his eye, his love & joy, and they meant the world to him; he said he could never bear life without them. Above all his greatest love was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and he looked forward to the day he would see Jesus face to face.
We shall miss his smile, hearty laugh, bear hugs, kisses, and his words of wisdom that gave us direction and made us feel safe and secure. We love you Papa. We will always hold you close in our hearts and memories, and look forward to the day we will be reunited in our eternal home.
