53, of Eden Prairie, MN passed peacefully at home April 26, 2013. Born June 7, 1959, Denise was raised in Ohio and Nigeria. Her B.A. and M.Ed. in Language, Reading, and Culture from the U of AZ were followed by her Ed.S. from MSU-Mankato. As an educator for 22 years in Tucson and Shakopee, Denise passionately advocated for students, teachers, and parents. In 2012 she received the first MN English Learner Advocate Award. Of her life's work she was most proud of raising her children, building an ESL program in Shakopee Schools, empowering great teachers to be even greater, and being a horse woman. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Paul; children, Lowell Amparan (Jessica), Rachael Harlos, Ann Harlos, and Beth Harlos; mother, Jean Lewis; siblings, David Lewis, Dee Faigin, and Dawn Lewis. She was preceded in death by her father Wilbur and brother Darrin. Memorial service 11 AM, Monday, 5/6/13 at CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 6901 Normandale Rd, Edina, MN. Visitation 90 min. prior. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the family. Please bring a children's book, new or used, to service for donation.
