Born near Lakota City, Nebraska in 1935. Poet laureate and sailor of Lake Superior; attorney and counsel for the American Indian Movement; athlete. As the waves of Lake Superior, changing and mutinous, but always questioning and learning. He is survived by his wife Pearl Anne Lemieux; sister, Gertrude Willoughby; daughter, Caroline; sons, Michael, James and Matthew; grandchildren, Brandon and Brea Crofoot. Also survived by Peter, Paula and Brandon Behm, Shelly, Troy Weiss, Zachary and Amanda. Preceded in passing by his parents, James Leonard and Gertrude Bartels Heffernan; daughter, Jenifer Crofoot and brother, Mark Heffernan. A memorial service will be held at the University Club, Saint Paul at a later date to be determined.
