Passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 11, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Survived by wife of 44 years, Margaret (Green); children Kyle (Joy) Irwin, Karna Irwin, Melissa (Matthew) Taylor, Andrea (Justin) Wesley; grandchildren Eden, Ben and Eli Irwin; Isaiah, Norah, Elijah and Levi Taylor; sisters Betty (Oluf) Kongshaug and Kay Voth, brother Mark Irwin; in-laws Jerry and Elaine Green and Char and Jon Jensen; many other relatives and friends. Don was greatly loved and appreciated as the self-appointed welcomer at First Presbyterian Church. His booming WAVN radio voice was often heard in announcements and narrations. Don could regularly be seen on the streets of Stillwater walking and reading his book, and he carefully logged titles, authors, and page numbers. He was a rock solid bass in the First Presbyterian choir, Valley Chamber Chorale and the River City Chorale, always expanding his classical music repertoire. Ever frugal and a determined coupon clipper, Don enjoyed bargain grocery shopping, cooking, and spending his free time in family pursuits such as tennis, softball, and scrabble games. Don spent most of his career working in downtown St. Paul as a Disability Specialist for the State of MN, and often spent his lunch hour attending free concerts and recitals. His favorite composer was J.S. Bach, no doubt because it was in the Bach Society Chorus that he met the love of his life, Margaret. Visitation Friday, October 13 from 5-8 PM at Bradshaw Celebration of Life in Stillwater. Service Saturday, October 14 at 5:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 6201 Osgood Avenue North, Stillwater with visitation starting at 4:00 PM. Memorials preferred to First Presbyterian Church, Valley Chamber Chorale, or FamilyMeans.
