Donald G. "Gus" Meyer
Age 85, of Maplewood (formerly of Lake Elmo), passed away peacefully on November 13, 2017, at Lakeview Hospital. He was preceded in death by parents, Gilbert and Freda Meyer, and infant sister. He will be sadly missed by wife of 54 years, JoAnne (Bingen); daughters, Lynn (Steve) Kroiss and Julie (Chris) Robinson; grandchildren, Reilly and Kasey Kroiss, and Gus and Sophie Robinson; brother, Roger (Sharon) Meyer; sister-in-law, Janet (Bob) LeRoux; brother-in-law John (Rebecca) Bingen.; nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Donald "Gus" Meyer was born on December 17, 1931. Don lived his entire life in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, until moving to Maplewood in recent years. In 1949, Don graduated from Stillwater High School, and then attended classes at the University of Minnesota and Globe Business College for a short time. Don served in the National Guard, and during the Korean War, he served stateside in the U.S. Army. On October 12, 1963, Don and JoAnne Bingen were united in marriage at Gustavus Adolphus Church.
Don worked for the family business, G.A. Meyer Mercantile Co. "Meyer Hardware" in Lake Elmo, for his entire life. Following the death of his father, Don owned and operated the store with his brother, Roger, and then later with his wife, JoAnne. Don was a life-long member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lake Elmo.
Don enjoyed wintering in Orange Beach, Alabama. And, could frequently be found monitoring the stock market from wherever he was. His greatest joy though was his four grandchildren. He would never miss a chance to go to a dance competition/recital, band concert, or to watch a soccer or hockey game whether it was on the internet, or in-person. When he was unable to attend, he would eagerly await phone updates on their events. Simply hearing about their day-to day activities brought him great joy. Whenever he talked about Reilly, Kasey, Gus or Sophie, you could see that he was beaming with pride. Don loved those four grandkids with his whole heart just as he loved his wife, JoAnne, daughters, Lynn and Julie, and sons-in-law, Steve and Chris. He would have done anything in the world for any of them.
