Donald Syring

Donald George Syring Sr. was born on December 9, 1928 in St. Paul, MN to Arthur William Syring and Emma Bertha (Waldhauser) Syring. Don had 3 brothers, Arthur, Irvin, and Robert and he had 2 sisters, Lorraine and Marlene. On September 5, 1953, Don married Gloria Bennett and they had 4 children, Susan of St. Croix Falls, WI, Cheryl of Grantsburg, WI. Don Jr. (Julie) of Grantsburg, WI, and Craig of Grantsburg, WI. Don and Gloria divorced in 1962. Don then married Dorothy Bye and they had 3 children, Michael (Dee) of St. Paul, Dale of Pine City, and Donna (Dave) of Pine City, MN. Don and Dorothy also later divorced.

Don took a job at Pioneer Engineering 2 weeks before Susan was born and he stayed at that job until he retired. Don also did electrical work on the side.

Don was an avid outdoorsman. He loved bow and rifle hunting, duck hunting, and fishing. He spent hours with Mike hunting on Dad’s cousin’s land south of the cities. He also owned land and a small cabin in Dairyland, WI where they went deer hunting. They took countless trips way up north to go fishing. There’s lots of pictures with all the ducks, deer, and fish he got. Don absolutely loved hunting.

Don had a good friend, Jim, that a had a garage right across the street from Dad’s house, he would help keep Jim company when he was working on his old cars. Dad always told me, “Susan, you’ve got to see his Model T. You’ve got to show him your Model A.” He loved tinkering over there. He showed us the beautiful the beautiful wooden clock and box and trinkets that Jim made for him.

Dad lived a long life at 93 years, some good, some bad, but he always made the best of it. Last winter, Dad started declining and Mike came to stay with him and help with everyday care. Unfortunately, Dad suffered from a stroke last week and his health went down quickly. He was taken to Regions Hospital and admitted on Friday, April 8, 2022. Dad passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2022. We the family would like to thank the doctors and nurses that took care of Dad in his final days.

I don’t think Dad realized just how many grandchildren he had, and he sure lost count with the great-grandchildren.

Don will be greatly missed by many relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Don's Life will be held 1-5 PM Wednesday May 4, 2022 at the North St. Paul VFW #1350, 2483 7th Ave E. 55109, in the Downstairs Hall. Phone # 651-777-2855.
