Dorothy Mae Bennett
Died Sept 19, at the age of 97. She was born Apr 24, 1924 in Menomonie, WI, the daughter of Bert and Effie Brunn. She was preceded in death by husband, Bill Bennett; sisters, Betty, Evelyn, Phyllis and Valeria; son, Michael Clapp; grandson, David. Dorothy is survived by children June Ferguson (Stan), Greg Clapp (Jean) and Steve Standish (Nancy); grandchildren Jason, Jeff, Kallie, Veronica, Shannon and Laurie; great-grandchildren Kelsey, Jayda, Alex, Zach, Lena, Nyah, Michelle and Melissa; and great-great grandson, Christian.
After graduating from high school in Menomonie in 1942, she enrolled at the UofM and entered the US Cadet Nurse Corps program. During that time, she met Scott. They married in 1945 and had four children, Mike, June, Greg and Steve. They separated and Dorothy went back to college and received her four year nursing degree in 1954. With children in school, she thought it would be good to have summers off, and returned to college to get her Public Health degree. She became School Nurse at Johnson High in St Paul. In addition to time with her kids during summers, she did a lot of traveling, visiting countries all over the world. In 1967, she married Bill (Red) Bennett, who became a wonderful step-father to her teenage kids.
After retirement as a school nurse, she followed her interest in genealogy and joined several patriotic organizations. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she served as the MN State Regent and National Vice President General. In the Daughters, Founder & Patriots of America (DFPA), she served as National President and National Treasurer. Dorothy also served in the MN Colony of New England Women, Daughters of the American Colonists and US Daughters of 1812. She was a lifelong member of the Mayflower Society and Jamestown Society. After retiring, she volunteered at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for 23 years and the Roseville Library.
When she wasn’t traveling, Dorothy enjoyed gardening, water color painting, and needlework crafts. She will be deeply missed by family and friends, and forever cherished.
