Dr. Timothy Allen Ackerman, DDS, MD, FACS

Dr. Timothy Ackerman, DDS, MD, FACS, passed away on March 9, 2025, at the age of 58. A distinguished oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a dedicated naval officer, and a beloved family man, Tim's life was one of service, compassion, and joy.

Born on October 21, 1966, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tim grew up in Cottage Grove and attended Park High School before continuing his education at St. Olaf College. He pursued his passion for dentistry at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where he earned numerous awards and graduated with high distinction. His commitment to excellence led him to accept a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy upon graduation.

Tim’s military career is marked by dedication and achievement. He completed a General Practice Residency in dentistry at Naval Medical Center San Diego before serving as a general dentist at the U.S. Navy Branch Dental Clinic in Sasebo, Japan. His pursuit of knowledge and skill led him to Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where he earned his medical degree. He further honed his expertise through a General Surgery internship and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Following his residency, Tim served as an instructor for Navy and Army residents before taking on leadership roles at Naval Hospital/Naval Dental Center Yokosuka in Japan as the Department Head for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His service extended to the USS KITTYHAWK CV-63 aircraft carrier, where he deployed to various locations across Southeast Asia. Upon returning stateside, he assumed leadership positions at the Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes/VA North Chicago (now the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center), where he served as Department Head, Specialty Advisor for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Tim’s commitment to humanitarian efforts was evident in his deployment aboard the USNS COMFORT during OPERATION CONTINUING PROMISE, providing medical assistance across nine countries in Central and South America. After an esteemed career in the Navy, he retired with the rank of Captain.

In 2015, he transitioned to civilian practice by joining True North Oral Surgery and Implants. He was known not only for his exceptional surgical skills but also for his mentorship and kindness toward colleagues and patients alike. He fostered a workplace culture of respect and learning, always eager to share knowledge with those around him. His infectious joy brightened every room he entered—whether through his warm presence or his well-loved Friday dad jokes.

Beyond his professional life, Tim found immense happiness in spending time with his family. He cherished every moment with them—celebrating his wife Laura Jo’s annual contributions to state fairs, championing Jeffrey's military achievements and collaborating with Christopher as he built his welding business.

Tim is preceded in death by his parents Ronald and Laverne Ackerman and daughter-in-law Alexandra Ackerman. He is survived by his wife Laura (Enochson), sons Jeffrey (Erin) and Christopher. His brothers Tom (Katie) and Steve, a large loving family, and many friends.

A deeply spiritual man, Tim loved his church community, singing in the choir and offering his services to those in need through Hope Dental Clinic. In his free time, he found solace in fly fishing and working with wood and metal in his shop—crafting intricate pieces that adorned his home with personal touches.

A celebration of life will be held on March 20, 2025, at Saint Andrew's Lutheran Church, 900 Stillwater Road, Mahtomedi. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM followed by an 11:00 AM service with military honors. A luncheon will follow.

Tim lived a life defined by service to his country, his profession, his faith, and most importantly, his family. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and joy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
