Dr. Richard Lee "Dick" Marnach
Died early Friday, May 3rd, after fighting a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Dr. Marnach passed away peacefully in the presence of family and friends just days away from his 59th birthday.
Richard was born to Norbert and Lorraine Marnach on May 19, 1954 in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from O'Gorman High School in 1972 and enrolled at the University of South Dakota majoring in biology. After graduation in 1976, Richard began work in health care and worked primarily as a technician operating cardiopulmonary bypass machines for open heart surgery. His interest in medicine increased and he returned to the University of South Dakota in 1981 and enrolled in the School of Medicine. After 2 years of medical studies, he transferred to Baylor University School of Medicine in Houston, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1985. Richard continued his medical education at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN from 1985 to 1988 and at Harvard Hospitals from 1988 to 1989.
Dr. Marnach worked on staff at Harvard Hospitals from 1989 to 1992 after which time he joined the staff at Minneapolis Children's and Gillette Children's Hospitals. Dr. Marnach specialized in pediatric anesthesiology and practiced in the Twin Cities until becoming ill in 2010.
Dr. Marnach's hobbies included aviation, both fixed wing and helicopter, scuba diving, and travel. He was also very passionate about medical missionary work and participated in some 30 medical mission trips in developing countries on 3 continents. These trips provided surgical care for children with congenital facial abnormalities as well as children with other special needs.
Dr. Marnach will be dearly missed by his three sons, Andrew, Will and Noah; mother, Lorraine Marnach, 2 brothers, Michael (Vickie) Marnach of Sioux Falls, SD and Daniel (Wendi) Marnach of Sioux Falls, SD; 2 sisters, Dr. Mary (Gil Boettcher) Marnach, of Rochester, MN and Nancy (Clyde) Straatmeyer of Hermosa, SD. He was preceded in death by his father, Norbert Marnach and infant brother, David.
Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, 11:00 A.M. at the CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PAUL, 239 Selby Avenue, St. Paul. Visitation Monday, 4-7 P.M. at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 2800 Curve Crest Boulevard (NW corner of Hwy 36 & Cty Rd 5), Stillwater.
