Edward Gene Hoffman
Age 77, of White Bear Lake, passed away Nov. 14,, 2012, surrounded by loving family.
Born in Carroll, Iowa on May 2, 1935, Ed grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa attending Abraham Lincoln High School then Iowa State University. An avid tennis player throughout his life, Ed was a two-time Iowa state high school runner-up singles player, team captain for Iowa State, and a two-time Big 6 conference finalist. An active player until just a few months ago, Ed had many friends throughout the Minnesota tennis community.
Ed was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in Tokyo in the late 50s. His 37-year engineering career at 3M started in Aurora, Ill. then moved to the Twin Cities in the mid-70s. Ed was a loyal fan of the Cyclones, Gophers, Twins, and Vikings. His interests included spending time at his beloved cabin outside Ely, fishing with friends, reading, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and cheering them on in their sports and activities. His gentle spirit and quiet determination will live on.
Ed is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy (Trentlage), daughter Becky Sass (R. Jay), son Tom (Amy), and grandchildren Caroline and Charlie Sass, and Erin, Sarah, and Kate Hoffman. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Dorothy Hoffman and twin daughters Sarah Ann and Kelly Leigh. He is also survived by his brother Michael (Bert) and nieces, Julie and Marsha Hoffman.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at White Bear Lake United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be sent to the Mahtomedi Area Educational Foundation or the White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation.
