Edwin Schmidt

Edwin Raymond Schmidt walked into Heaven’s Gates on June 14th, 2021, at the age of 92.

He was born in Gackle, ND, youngest child of Christina and John Schmidt.

He was educated in Gackle, and continued his studies at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, going on to Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and earning a Masters of Divinity Degree in 1949.

He served for 56 years with Evangelical Lutheran Church parishes in North Dakota, Illinois, and North Carolina. He retired in 1993 and moved to Stillwater, Minnesota where he continued to serve in his pastoral capacity at Boutwell’s Landing. His passion for ministry continued by leading communion services, counseling, and showing a genuine love for the people he grew to know and love there.

He married Jean Galliart in 1952, and together they raised 4 children; Beth, Paula, Eric, and Stephen. They also were the proud grandparents of 9. Ed and Jean were married for 56 years before Jean’s death in 2008.

After Jean’s death, he married Patricia Simonett in 2009, and they lived at Boutwell’s Landing for the rest of his life.

There are many words that capture the essence of Ed; an extreme extrovert, a jokester, one who found the humor in every situation, endearing himself to everyone he met. He was a devoted husband and father, who beamed with pride when talking about his family.

Ed will be remembered as a loving and spiritual pastor to many throughout his years. His accomplishments are unsung, but his influence will endure; be one of those who make life bearable, make your time together fun, and one who lived with a purpose; being God’s Light in this world.

The family’s heartfelt thanks goes to Boutwell’s Landing staff on every level, who showed compassionate care and love to him and the family. Every step of the way, Boutwell’s was there to march on through the years with Dad and our family.

Memorial Service 11AM Thursday, July 8th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1616 Olive Street West, Stillwater, with visitation beginning one hour prior.
