North Oaks

Elizabeth Ann Tofte, known by her loved ones and friends as Betty Ann, peacefully passed away on October 3, 2023, at the age of 101 in North Oaks, MN surrounded by her family. She was born on April 14, 1922, in Amery, WI, to the late Clarence and Dortha Nelson.

Betty Ann will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her daughters, Nancy Tofte Schmidt (Darrell Schmidt), Jacquelyn Ann Tofte (David Broberg), and Barbara Tofte Bradley (John Bablitch), her 2 grandchildren (Brad and Andy Schmidt), 5 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hubert J. Tofte.

Betty Ann attended Amery High School and continued her education at Hamline University, MN, in nursing. She met her husband, Hubert Tofte, while he finished U of M dental school. They built their home in Grand Rapids, MN. She dedicated her life to being a loving and inspiring mother to her three daughters.

Her spirituality was a source of strength, comfort and guidance to her family and those who knew her. She worshiped and served at the Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids and attended First Presbyterian Church of White Bear Lake. Betty Ann was one of the first residents to move into the Presbyterian Homes community at Waverly Gardens in North Oaks, MN. She loved and engaged with their caring staff, residents, and the beautifully landscaped grounds which she walked regularly.

In her leisure time, Betty Ann enjoyed music, travel, cooking, sewing, playing bridge, dancing and entertaining. She loved spending time outdoors; golfing, gardening, trout fishing, horseback riding, and walking through the woods. Her joyful spirit touched the lives of everyone she met, revealing her positive attitude, compassion for others, and playfulness. She celebrated each day with a grateful heart. She was a classy and sassy, tiny but mighty woman.

Plans for celebrating her life are in process. A memorial bench will be dedicated next spring along the Waverly Garden walking trails next to the pond, according to her wishes. Betty Ann’s family extends their gratitude for the compassion and guidance shown by the staff at Waverly Gardens, St. Croix Hospice, and Whitebear Bradshaw Funeral and Cremation Services during this difficult time. Betty Ann’s legacy of joy, kindness, and devotion will forever live on in our hearts. May she rest in eternal peace.

Condolences and memorial contributions can be sent to the family c/o Jacquelyn Tofte at 2404 NW Third St, Grand Rapids, MN 55744.
