Dahl, Ellen died at home peacefully at the age of 83 on October 18th with her 3 boys at her side.
She was preceded in death by her father (George), mother (Dorothy), and sister (Patricia).
She is survived by her 3 sons Carl (Sandi), Matt (Tracy), and Tom (Lori) as well as by her granddaughter Abbey (Tom and Lori), many grandpets and countless friends and surrogate sons and daughters.
Ellen retired from the Department of Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Minnesota after 25+ years. As a member of the New Brighton Park Board in the late 1960's and 1970's she was instrumental in the growth of the New Brighton park system, especially Hansen Park. When her boys were young, she spent many an hour standing in the snow bank between the rinks at Hansen Park cheering them on and that unyielding support continued throughout her life. She devoted the majority of the second chapter of her life to supporting others. She sold tickets for her beloved Gopher sports teams for many years to pay for her travels with trips to places like Montreal, Machu Pichu, and Washington to visit her beloved granddaughter Abbey, but also so she could be around the students she worked with. She volunteered for many years at Joseph's Coat in St. Paul, the Union Gospel Mission, and Second Harvest Heartland where she was a familiar face year round. The Death with Dignity movement was one that she was deeply involved with for the last several years of her life. She was also a long-time hospice volunteer and passed away in their care, but on her own terms.
