Age 59, of Stillwater, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on March 11, 2024 after a 4-month battle with cancer.
Eric grew up in the charming neighborhood of the South Hill, filled with remarkable, life-long friends who he remained close to his entire life. More than just a beloved son, brother and friend, Eric was an accomplished athlete. Excelling in baseball, hockey and football he earned All-State honors as a linebacker.
As a Stillwater High School graduate, Eric leveraged his football skills into a full ride scholarship to North Dakota State. After a successful first season he decided his love for hockey was calling and transferred to the University of Minnesota. There, “Mr. Hit” played for the Golden Gophers for three years, not only celebrating getting to the championships twice but also finding the love of his life, Amy.
While his athletic achievements brought him pride and passion, nothing ignited his fire quite like his family. Devoted to his wife Amy for nearly 37 years, together they built what Eric considered his greatest accomplishment: his children.
Eric’s infectious energy was a force to be reckoned with. His charismatic smile, witty one-liners and welcoming personality would brighten any room. Though his years were cut short, he lived his life full of gusto. From the thrill of reeling in a fish to the joy of cruising on Crosslake to the mastery of grilling a perfect meal, Eric was the heart and soul of the party.
Having a way with words, he never shied away from expressing his emotion. He often shared his gratitude for family and friends with heartfelt signature toasts that left everyone in tears.
Eric: Friend, Brother, Teammate, Husband, Dad, Uncle, Papa…Dorny, you will be forever missed and will remain in our hearts forever.
Eric was preceded in death by parents, Earl and Mary; and sister, Debra.
He will be sadly missed by wife, Amy; son, Ian; daughter, Chelsea (Ben) Wiegand; grandchildren, Harvey, Wren and Avery; siblings, Diane and Doug; several nieces and nephews including special nieces, Carly and Erica; and special nephew, Dan; other family and friends.
Special thanks to nurse Lauren and the Lakeview Hospice team for their compassionate care and support.
A gathering to celebrate Eric’s life will be Tuesday, March 26, 2024, 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 2800 Curve Crest Boulevard, Stillwater. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2024, 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 115 North 4th Street, Stillwater. Family will receive friends following the service at the church.
