Esther Fenger Voetmann Brown, born in Mason City, IA, February 22, 1916, died at home on March 26. Her parents, Holger and Else Voetmann, Danish immigrants, started farming in Askov, MN in 1917. In 1926, the family bought a farm in Balsam Lake, WI. In 1938, she graduated from Northwestern Bible College, Mpls. and in 1941, from Mounds Midway School of Nursing, St. Paul, and worked as a staff nurse at Midway Hospital. In 1942, she accepted a four-year assignment as a Federal Civil Servant Nurse for the U.S. Government Health Department in the Panama Canal Zone. As WWII was ending, Esther met Jesse Leamon Brown, Chief Machinist Mate, US Navy. They married September 30, 1945, at Balboa Heights Baptist Church in the Canal Zone, returning to Minnesota in 1946. After their four children started school, Esther resumed her profession as an R.N. until age 82. With her husband she traveled the world, was deeply involved with Calvary Baptist Church, Northwestern and Mounds Midway alumni associations, and many volunteer activities. For 53 years, their home on Lexington Ave. was the center for many happy gatherings of friends and a large, extended family, whose stories and history she valued.
