On March 6, 2020, Fred Henry Squires went home to Jesus at the age of 75. Fred was known for
his strong work ethic and humble spirit, both likely the product of being raised on a large grain
and cattle farm near Jackson, Minnesota. At the age of nine, Fred’s father died suddenly of a
heart attack, leaving Fred and his sister, Gretchen, to run the farm with their mother, Martha.
As a child, Fred attended a one-room schoolhouse, working the farm before and after school.
The family attended a small country church where at the age of eight he met Jeannie, the girl
who would later become his wife.
Fred attended Mankato State University, earning a degree in math and industrial design with a
minor in physics. He joined Univac-Sperry Rand (Unisys) in the Twin Cities and Houston, working
for nearly three years on the early Apollo space flights. He subsequently managed teams of
software developers and projects for First Bank System, IBM, and Deluxe Corporation. After a
successful corporate career, Fred switched gears to work in ministry in 2000, using his skillset in
tech, finance and leadership development to serve Christian and Missionary Alliance churches
in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Fred and Jeannie spent 10 years in Appleton, Wisconsin for
this role before returning to the Twin Cities.
In recent years Fred had many significant health challenges, but despite them all, he patiently
persevered without complaint. “Bless the Lord, oh my soul … whatever may pass and whatever
lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes.” Fred’s positive outlook and quiet
strength were rooted firmly in his deep faith in Jesus.
Jeannie and the family would like to express gratitude to the many doctors/specialists who
cared for Fred’s needs, and especially to the staff at DaVita Maplewood Dialysis Center whose
loving care extended his time here for another six-plus years, allowing Fred’s life to be full and
meaningful even throughout the challenges of that final season. They are also indebted to
friends and family for their love and prayers throughout the long medical journey of recent
years.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Martha Squires, and his father-in-law,
Clinton Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jeannie; son, Chad (Lucinda) and
their children, Cory and Kayla; son, Jeremy (Dita) and their children, Caleb and Chloe; sister,
Gretchen (Dan) Foote; mother-in-law, Maythel Johnson; and beloved friends and extended
family.
