Age 88, passed away on March 5, 2018 with his wife by his side. Born in Paris and raised in Madagascar, son of Lutheran missionaries. Served as pastor in Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin, and was proud to serve as a Chaplain in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille; children, John (Sarah Bernstein), Ann (Glenn) Buttermann, Carol (Peter) Chapman, Martin; grandchildren, Paul, Meaghan, Emily, Elisabeth, Karl, Hans, Bjorn, Emily; siblings, Jane, Agnes, Helen, Phyllis, Betty, Chris, Solveig. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Alvilde; brother, Erling; siblings, Anna and Eunice. Fred wrote, "Fred and Lucille have always been grateful to God, who by Jesus' life, death, resurrection and presence through his Holy Spirit keeps giving the gift of his grace - the assurance of forgiveness and his constant presence in this life, and the assurance of the resurrection and eternal life with God." Memorial service will be Saturday, March 10 at SEASONS OF MAPLEWOOD, 1670 Legacy Pkwy E, Maplewood. Private family interment at Fort Snelling. Memorials preferred to Global Health Ministries.
