George Riley Stoops, 88, passed on October 2nd, 2019 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by wife Loraine Stoops, daughters Jen Severson (spouse Keith) and Rebecca Wagner (spouse Tom), 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a wealth of friends.
George was born on 3/3/31 in Napanee, Indiana. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology and a master’s degree in geography. He was a city planner in Toledo, Ohio. He then became a professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he taught geography and city planning for 22 years. He also owned and operated Rickway Carpet in North Mankato for over 30 years.
He enjoyed camping, traveling, playing tennis, exercising and spending time with family. He was a man of integrity, wisdom and great heart. George was a passionate supporter of many charitable organizations and gave generously to environmental, social equality, and humanitarian concerns.
A celebration of life service will be held at 5 pm on Saturday, October 5th, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church of Stillwater, 6201 Osgood Ave N. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you please consider donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the Sierra Club, or the Animal Humane Society.
