and Great Grandma
Helen passed away on November 23, 2006, at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, MN.
Helen was born to Anton & Agnes Barta on October 3, 1909, at the home of her maternal grandparents, Joseph & Anna Machovec, in Elkhorn Township, IA. When she was age 4, she moved with her parents to a farm in Fulton Township. She went to a nearby one-room school through eighth grade. In 1928, she graduated from Moorland High School.
During the summers of 1928 and 1929, Helen attended the UNI in Cedar Falls. Extra degree credits were earned from Drake University by taking night and day courses in Ft. Dodge. She taught school in Fulton Township for 4 years, Greenfield Township for 9 years, and Prairie Community School in Callender for 19 years. She was an active member of Fulton Lutheran Church. Helen married Albert Harklau on December 30, 1931. They lived on a farm 2 miles north of Somers. In 1976 they moved to Roelyn, IA. On December 27, 2005, Helen moved to Stillwater, MN.
Albert died on January 4, 1992. Helen is also preceded in death by parents; sister, Mayme Konvalinka; and brother, Thomas Barta.
Loving mother of sons, Pastor Arvid (Elaine) Harklau, of Lima, OH, and Lanny (Sharon) Harklau, of Stillwater, MN. Six grandchildren, Stephanie (Jason) Shamroski, Peter (Tracey) Harklau, Michelle Harklau, Beth (Mark) Herzfeld, John Harklau, and James (Suzan) Harklau. Seven great grandchildren, Sami, Dianna & Kevin Shamroski, Hannah & Noah Herzfeld, and Luke & Jessica Harklau.
Also survived by sister, Agnes Gassmann, of Grainfield, KS, and brother, Floyd (Dorothy) Barta, of Callender, IA, and many nieces & nephews.
Visitation Monday, November 27, 2006, 5 ? 7 p.m., with hymns at 6 p.m. followed by a service, at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., Stillwater, MN. An additional service and interment will be held in Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Bradshaw, 651 439-5511.
