Lawson, Helen L.
Passed away suddenly but peacefully on March 13, 2010 at the age of 88. Beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. Survived by loving companion and husband of 66 years, Rod; children Mary, Rory and David (Judy); grandchildren Kate, Natalie, Alex and Paul; brother Jack; nieces and nephews Sarah, Adine, Peter and their children Jenna, Betsy, Andrew and Adam. Preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law Liz and nephew John. She was born and raised in Stillwater where her parents and grandparents settled and thrived and was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a University of Minnesota graduate, longtime member of the Friday Study Club founded by her mother and several friends in 1924 to stimulate intellectual interests for women, Stillwater Historical Society tour guide and supporter, chair of the Library Board and Lakeview Hospital Auxiliary, and member of the AAUW. She loved cooking and created two cookbooks; one showcasing recipes from the great cooks of Stillwater from her and her mother's generations and one which has been used for fifteen years as a fund raiser for the John Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Fl. She was a championship golfer, loved tennis and was able to enjoy them year round when she and Rod spent their winters in Florida. She often offered food and a chance to talk to friends, family and acquaintances who were having a difficult time. Helen never met a recipe she wasn't willing to try and she never met a stranger who didn't become a friend. Memorial Service Monday, 11:00 A.M. at BOUTWELL'S LANDING SWANSON FAMILY CHAPEL, 5600 Norwich Parkway, Oak Park Heights. Visitation one-hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church of Stillwater and the Stillwater library.
