Herb (Evan) was delivered into this world by his uncle, Dr. Emil Fogelberg (“Uncle Doc”), at Midway Hospital in St. Paul, MN. He lived his 1st years in North Dakota and then they moved to St. Paul when he was about 4 years old. He grew up near Como Park, attended Como Park Elementary, Como Park Junior High, and Washington High School, graduating in 1963.
He attended the University of Minnesota and worked as a custodian at Miller Hospital, where he met Luci. He then joined the US Marine Corps in September of 1965.
He was stationed first at Cherry Point, NC, then Camp Pendleton, CA, and then on to spend a year in Okinawa. While there he worked as a mechanic and did inspections on vehicles coming back and going to Viet Nam.
Upon returning to the USA in 1967, he and Luci wed and were married for 53 years. They spent the next year at the Marine Corps Supply Depot in Albany, GA where Herb worked guard duty. He was then transferred to Quonset Point Naval Air Base in RI where he worked guard duty until his honorable discharge in 1969.
When Herb was discharge from the USMC, he and Luci moved back to St. Paul, MN. He worked for MN Transfer RR, Nothwestern Flooring and Lumber, Interior Wood Products, and Northwestern Flooring. After earning his Associates Degree in Business from Century College, he then started his own business, Midway Hardwood Floors, Inc. where he installed, sanded, finished, and refinished hardwood floors for 40 years.
Because of his love of the job, he still worked part time until the spring of 2020, when his body began to betray him. He was diagnosed with ALS in August of 2020, and it took his life on December 16, 2020.
Herb had many hobbies including camping, wood turning, gardening, reading, fishing, watching movies, and fixing everything. He enjoyed staying active with the Metro Marines. His favorite thing to do was quietly spend time with his daughter and her family.
He is survived by many special people in his life and most of all his family: Wife, Luci; Daughter, Tamala (Christian) Kolling; Grandchildren, Natalie (Brady Greiner) of Faribault, Gillian (Derrick Drake) of Isanti, Reid of Cambridge, Meredith of Pine City; Great-grandchildren, Elexis and Vivienne; Sisters, Karin (Curt) O’Connor and Cheryl (Bruce) Wray; Nieces, Katie and Jennifer; Nephews, Jason, Mark, and Paul.
