DUCKWORTH
Herman Louis Duckworth, the son of Herman Henry and Della Rosalie Duckworth, was born on September 22, 1930, in Pueblo, Colorado. He graduated from Englewood High School in 1949. He began working for the telephone company on January 2, 1950 in the construction department. He erected telephone polls and strung telephone lines all over the state of Colorado.
On July 21, 1951, Herman was united in Marriage to Shirley Jean Payton. Three children were born to this union - Dorothy, Judy, and Dale. The family enjoyed fishing, camping, and boating. On January 18, 1961, Shirley and Dale died a tragic death. Dorothy died from cancer on October 24, 1986.
Herman continued working for the phone company. Eventually he moved his family to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and in 1982, retired from the telephone company. It was in Florida that he met Shirley Magnuson. They traveled to Minnesota and Herman fell in love with that part of the country. He and Shirley were united in marriage on February 4, 1989, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minnesota - on one of the coldest days of the year!
Herman and Shirley enjoyed many travels. They traveled all over the United States and went on several cruises.
Herman loved to hunt and fish. He built several boats. He scuba dived off the coast of Moorhead City, North Carolina. He snorkeled in the John Penecamp State Park on the Florida Keys. He loved electronic gadgets. He also gave much of himself to many volunteer organizations.
Herman died on Friday, October 17, 2003, at Linden Nursing Home, Stillwater, Minnesota, having attained the age of seventy-three years and twenty-five days. In addition to his parents and his first wife, Herman was preceded in death by his daughter, Dorothy and his son, Dale.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Stillwater, MN; his daughter, Judy Knudsen and her husband, Stan of Harlan, IA; his daughter-in-law, Karin Magnuson of Fort Lauderdale, FL; his granddaughters, Dawn Knudsen of Des Moines, IA, Greta Knudsen of Harlan, IA, and Kelley Newman and her husband, Mike of Boca Raton, FL; great-grandchildren, Stephany and Bradly; sisters, Rosemary Peirson of FL, Elaine Blair and her husband, Richard of CO, and Arlene Clark and her husband, Vern of SC; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Private services. Memorials preferred to Lakeview Hospice.
