Passed away unexpectedly on September 15, 2014. Preceded in death by wife, Eudora; infant son, John; parents, Joseph & Florence. He will be deeply missed by wife of 25 years, Carol; children, Scott (Pam), Tom (Wendy), Sue (Mark) Bonitz; step-children, Lynn (Gary Howe), Bruce (Lori), Kristin, and David (Wendy) Hagstrom and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Howard graduated from Murray High School in St. Paul in 1944. Served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific during WWII. Earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1949 and Masters Degree in social welfare from the UC Berkeley in 1954. Employed by the MN Dept of Corrections for 42 years as a parole and probation officer, prison administrator, Chairman of the State Parole Board, and Deputy Commissioner of Corrections. At retirement in 1992 he had the longest tenure of any Deputy Commissioner in the state government. His greatest passions were his family and spending time with them at the lake. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 11 AM at FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 6201 Osgood Ave. N., Stillwater with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Private interment Fairview Cemetery. Memorials preferred to First Presbyterian Church and Lakeview Hospice.
