Age 93 of Stillwater

Passed away peacefully on January 12th, 2025.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marilyn; children, Karen Madson, Sue (Christopher) Brokl, Diane (Craig) Knoll; grandchildren, Luke (Dani Silva) Brokl, Emma (Clint Sawyer) Brokl, Maddie (Kody Reich) Knoll, Clay (Floreal Crubaugh), Brooke Knoll.

Hugh had a deep commitment to his family and the St. Croix Valley. He grew up in Bayport and graduated from Stillwater High School. He was awarded the distinction of Eagle Scout and was involved with scouting until his death. After high school, Hugh enlisted in the Coast Guard and served on the Mackinaw ice breaker in the Great Lakes. He then went on to earn a business degree at the University of MN. Upon graduating, the majority of his career was in employee benefits sales management.

Hugh and Marilyn lived in Lake Elmo for 47 years and enjoyed lifelong friendships. His community contributions include serving in the volunteer fire department and being president of the Lions Club. He especially enjoyed being the announcer at the Lion's annual fishing contest.

Hugh was the recipient of the Stillwater Area High School Distinguished Alumni Award for his leadership positions, including serving as board chair for First State Bank and Trust, District 834 School Board, 916 Vocational Technical Board (now part of Century College) and Courage Foundation.

Hugh had a passion for building projects, including a pontoon houseboat for fun on the St. Croix River. He spent many hours building HO model train layouts. He was volunteering with the Boutwells Landing modelers group the day before his death.
