Beloved husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed. Hugo, also known as “Butch,” was born on St. Paul’s East Side, attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School, Harding High and Century College. He worked for Applebaum’s supermarkets, trained as a police officer in Maplewood, and served in the Mendota Heights Police Department for 26 years.
Hugo is survived by his loving wife Susan; son, Joseph (Erin); daughter, Kelly Jo Meyer; and his daughter and son by marriage, Angela Finholt and Herman (Nita) Oswald; grandchildren Stephanie, Andrea and Tony Finholt; Ben Daniel, Jennifer and Hermie Oswald. Also survived by his sister Mary Ann (Robert) Pavel; and brother-in-law Michael (Cheri) Gilde; as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo, Sr. and Magdalyn Blackfelner, and by his son Tony. Hugo enjoyed traveling, photography, motorcycles, bowling, and singing along with music – as well as fishing, hunting, and all things outdoors. He had a green thumb and grew a fabulous array of vegetables in his large garden. But most of all Hugo loved making others feel good. Special thanks to the staff at Encore Memory Care in Hugo and Intrepid Hospice.
A gathering to celebrate Hugo’s life will be held at 11:00am Thursday, July 13 with visitation one hour prior at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 4600 Greenhaven Drive, White Bear Lake, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or to the charity of your choice.
