Isla Oira

d. June 25, 2014

Our little Miss Isla Paige was born January 22, 2014 at 1:24 am. 6lbs 11oz and 19.5 inches long. She was diagnosed with 22Q11 (aka DiGeorge syndrome - a chromosomal deletion disorder) and had open heart surgery at 2 days old. She was on ECMO for several days and underwent multiple cardiac caths with stent placement. Due to the 22Q11, she only had one lung, the vessels leading to and from her left lung were abnormal, and she had complete tracheal rings. Isla underwent a sliding tracheoplasty (tracheal reconstruction) to correct her tracheal rings and bronchial malacia as well as had a conduit added to her left pulmonary artery. The doctors gave her 50/50 chance of survival. She beat the odds and the surgery was more than successful.

Due to complications with DiGeorge Syndrome, Isla passed away on June 25, 2014. She is survived by her parents Mark and Melissa (Rodriguez) Oira, Grandparents Philip and Colleen Rodriguez and Benito and Sonia Oira, Aunts and Uncles Amanda Rodriguez, Erik and Ashley (Rodriguez) Johnson, Phillip and Angela (Rodriguez) Schmidt, Malou Rodriguez, and Steven Oira, Cousins Paxton Schmidt and Elias Johnson, and many extended family and friends.

Isla was loved by countless people and we saw miracle after miracle evident in her life. We were told at her birth she most likely wouldn't survive more than a couple days. The Lord blessed us with her for five whole months. We are mourning the loss of her but are rejoicing at what she has gained.
