Passed away after a long illness in North Oaks, MN. A memorial service and celebration of a remarkable life will be held on June 27, 2011 10:30am at Waverly Gardens, Presbyterian Homes, 5919 Centerville Rd, North Oaks, MN. (enter door "E" at rear of bldg) Join the family for a light luncheon following the service.



Born in South Bend, Indiana December 7, 1926, he entered Notre Dame University at the age of 16. He was called to duty and served as a sergeant in Germany during WWII. After the war he completed his studies at Notre Dame and entered medical school at Washington University in 1948 and married Beverly J. Harden, also from South Bend in 1949.



Dr. Titus was a popular general practitioner in Rensselaer, Indiana. He began his life-long interest in cardiovascular pathology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, earned a PHD in pathology at the University of Minnesota, joined the Mayo Graduate School faculty in 1961, becoming a Professor in 1972. He was coordinator of the Pathology Training Programs at Mayo.



As an academic physician he achieved world-renowned stature. He was recruited to head the Baylor College of Medicine Department of Pathology, Houston, Texas in 1972, concurrently appointed the W. L. Moody Jr. Professor and Chairman of the department, Chief of the Pathology Service of the Methodist Hospital, and pathologist-in-chief of the Harris County Hospital District as well as senior consultant in the Department of Pathology of the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Houston, TX.



He published extensively, was active in many professional groups, was a visiting professor and invited lecturer on cardiac disease in the United States and worldwide, and served on the editorial boards of several medical journals.



Desiring to focus on cardiovascular pathology, Dr. Titus became Director of the Jesse E. Edwards Registry of Cardiovascular Disease at United Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota in 1987. He was professor of pathology at the University of Minnesota and adjunct professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He served on many major research investigations and committees; and received many distinguished achievements, awards and honors including the Service to Humanity Award for the United Hospital Foundation in 2004, the year he retired.



He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beverly; sons, Jack. L., Jr. (Marcie), Coon Rapids, MN; Michael (Jennifer), Denver, CO; Matthew, Beverly Hills, CA; daughters, Betsy Engelbrecht (Piet), Marble Falls, TX; Joan Davis (Kevin), College Station, TX; 8 grand children; 5 great grand children; and sisters, Carol Hollahan Tegel, Peggy L. Munson and Nancy Jo Johnson. He was predeceased by siblings Robert N. Titus and Marianna Titus.



The family extends special thanks to the crew at Waverly Garden Care Center and Chaplin Bruce Nelson for his support.
