James C. Hobbie

peacefully entered into eternal life Tuesday, February 16, 2022 at home (from cancer).

A 1968 graduate of Humboldt HS, he remained the quintessential ‘West Sider’.  Jim never forgot his roots. Born and raised on St. Paul’s west side; he loved the closeness and lifetime friendships created in school at Riverview and Humboldt. Called Hobs, Jimmy, or simply Hobbie by those to this day. Nearly every Sunday it was still dinner at his folks. Even though his mother later moved to Baldwin WI, he enjoyed taking a drive back to the old neighborhood, point out where his friends had lived and tell stories about them; where he played ball, skated, the movie theater and the Dairy Queen. Passing a vintage home or building, Jim would likely have a memory about it.

Jim and Dee Dee first met in 1971 and were married June 10, 1978 at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church by Pastor Kenneth Ludescher in Maplewood, MN.

We built our home with the help of family and friends on 3 acres in the country south of Stillwater. (He found the land because a former West Side neighbor lived out there!) We enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, fishing, and eventually built a lake cabin in Hayward, WI. Jim was a sports lover: hockey, football, baseball, Indy 500 and Nascar, you name it ... I was happy to have those Sunday’s free! It all worked out! Monday night football was a bonus! Jim excelled in many sports from the time he was young but hockey was his passion. A graduate of TVI, he worked in the printing business over 40 years.

Preceded in death by parents Carl and Ann (née Hetland) Hobbie, mother-in-law Evelyn, father-in-law Gerald, and brother-in-law ‘Pete’.

He will be forever remembered in stories and with smiles by his wife of 43 years, Dee Dee (née Virnig) sister Judy (Duane) Alwin; 2 brothers-and 4 sisters-in-law; ‘Auntie’ Jim to innumerable nieces & nephews; countless cousins, and friends.

Visitation Sunday, February 27th from 3-6:30 PM with a prayer service at 4 PM at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., Stillwater, MN.
