On December 1, 2023, the beautiful soul of James Thomas Urmann, departed this world to join his beautiful bride, Jeannette, in the ever after. Born on September 3, 1935, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, James was the beloved son of his adoptive parents, John and Marie Urmann. James’ life journey was a testament to service, family, and the simple joys that make life meaningful.
Raised in the heart of St. Paul, James graduated from Wilson High School, where he made some lifelong friends. James embarked on a life of service, enlisting first in the Merchant Marines and later dedicating himself to the United States Army as a proud member of the 101st Airborne Division. His commitment to duty extended to the United States Coast Guard, a testament to his unwavering devotion to his country.
On March 3, 1962, James exchanged vows with the love of his life, Jeannette Swanson. They built a life together in Saint Paul, where James carved out a distinguished career as a pressman in the printing industry, leaving an indelible mark over multiple decades.
A man of varied interests, James was a member of the Silver Sneakers and, in his leisure time, found joy in pursuits like pickleball, cribbage, 500, hunting, fishing, and leisurely walks in the woods. His family fondly recalls him as a loving husband and father, describing him as possessing a giving nature, a kind soul, and a stoic disposition.
James leaves behind a legacy of love and family. He is survived by his adoring daughter, Julie (Chuck) Chemis; son, Jeffery (Lori) Urmann; daughter-in-law, Lori; grandchildren, Joey, Danny, Charley (Kristin), Andy, Joshua, Katherine, Sarah, Nicole, Amanda, and great granddaughter, Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jeannette, and sons, Michael and John.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 9:30 AM on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, 7601 34th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55450. The procession will leave Assembly Area 4 at 9:15. A public reading of deceased service member's names from the previous month will take place Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024, at 8:30 AM at the flagpole near the main entrance.
