Janet Catherine Mattson, nee Holloway, known to many as "Jan", passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024, at the age of 90 in Minneapolis, MN. She was born on July 6, 1933, in Rochester, MN, the only child of Russell and Ruth Holloway.
Jan is survived by her loving children, Julie Mattson Ostrow (Paul Ostrow), Tracy Mattson (Jim Strande), and James (Angela) Mattson; grandchildren, Matthew and Emily Ostrow, Kira Strande (Austin Schaeffer), Jordann (Josh) Crowley, and Lauren, Christopher and Luke Mattson; and two great-grandchildren, Theodore and Arlo Crowley.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Burlin "Bud" Mattson.
Jan was a kind and gracious woman dedicated to her family and community. She was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling with Bud and, in her later years, working on jigsaw puzzles. Jan's calming presence, supportive nature, and gentle spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Her educational journey included attending Rochester Public School (Class of 1951) in Rochester, MN. Jan's father, who had a 7th grade education, said the best gift he could give his grandchildren was to make sure they had a well-educated mother. In 1955 she graduated from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN. It was at Macalester that Jan met her future husband, Bud. They were married on August 27, 1955. Jan and Bud lived in the Twin Cities and started their family, welcoming two girls, Julie and Tracy. In 1962, after the sudden death of her mother, the young family moved to Rochester. Soon after, a son, James, was born. Jan and Bud retired to Ely, MN, moving back to Rochester in 2005.
Jan was very proud to be a US Figure Skating judge. As a girl she was a member of the Rochester Figure Skating Club and enjoyed skating in the Summer Pops Ice Shows at the Mayo Civic Auditorium. Her two daughters became figure skaters and her son skated in the Boys hockey classes. She sewed numerous ice show costumes and volunteered at the club. In about 1973, David and Carole Shulman convinced her to become a judge. She attended many USFS Governing Council meetings with her dear friend Gretchen Wilson. She was also a proud skating grandmother. Jan was a recipient of the Twin City Figure Skating Association's Champion for Skating Award and in 2015 was honored by the Rochester Figure Skating Club with a Lifetime Achievement award. Over her skating career she mentored many younger judges including her daughter, Julie.
A memorial service to honor Jan's life will be held on Saturday, May 25th at Grace University Lutheran Church, 324 SE Harvard St., Minneapolis, MN 55414. Visitation will begin at 10 am, a memorial service at 11 am, followed by a light lunch. Parking is available across the street from the church. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Jan's memory to the Rochester Figure Skating Club (21 Elton Hills Drive NW Rochester, MN 55901).
