Arendt, Jermaine D. "Jerry" Age 81, Of Saint Paul Born May 25, 1924, in St. Paul, MN; died while surrounded by his family at St. Joseph's Hospital on April 21, 2006, in St. Paul, MN, at 81 years of age. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Walter and Hazel (Jermaine) Arendt. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ardis; brother Walter C. "Pat" (Mary) Arendt; daughters Janet Barrett, Becky (Rich) Meyerhofer, Peggy (Gary) Anderson, and Sandra (Mark) Miller; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Jerry graduated from Harding High School in St. Paul. He went on to earn his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He served in the 99th Division of the US Army during WW II and was in active combat, including the Battle of the Bulge. While a soldier in the post-war occupation of Germany, he began his life-long love of foreign languages. He first taught English and German in Mora, MN. He went on to teach German, Russian, and English at South High School in Minneapolis. His next position was as a Consultant in Modern Foreign Languages at the Minnesota State Department of Education. Then he spent the next 20 years as the Consultant in Modern Languages for the Minneapolis Public Schools. During that time he received two Fulbright awards to study in Europe. He was one of the founders of the Concordia Language Camps. His career included tenure as: President of both the American and the Minnesota Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages; President of both the Minnesota Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and the national AATG; President of the Minneapolis Retired Teachers Association; and President of the Minneapolis-Ibaraki City Cultural Association (a sister city program). Jerry served as Chairperson for the Minneapolis Lions Club Youth Exchange Program and was the Director of the Minnesota/Baden-Wurttemberg Student Exchange Program. He also served on the boards of the Minneapolis Association of Administrators and Consultants, the Minneapolis Lions Club Foundation, and the AATG. He was greatly loved and we will miss him. Memorial Service Tuesday, 1PM at BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3901 36th Avenue S., Minneapolis. Gathering A� hour prior to the service at church. Memorials preferred to donor's choice.
