Jerry Lee Clausen, MD, 78, passed away on August 3, 2018 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on his wedding anniversary. He and Nancy were married for 56 years. Jerry was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, son of Douglas William Clausen and Florence Jean Amidon, and had one sister, Jacqueline Clausen Boorman.
Dr. Clausen graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 1957, Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT, and Albany Medical School. He completed a Psychiatric Residency at Upstate University Medical School, Syracuse, NY, was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and was board certified in Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry. He was on the staff of the Onondaga Pastoral Counselling Center for 20 years and was awarded the Wayne Wilson Award for Excellence.
Jerry served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He was stationed at the Bremerton, WA Naval Hospital in the Psychiatry Department. He ended his tour as Lieutenant Commander.
Dr. Clausen was a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Syracuse for 52 years. He taught Sunday School, served several positions on the Board of Trustees, co-chaired the youth group for several years, and was on the Green Sanctuary Committee. "Service was his prayer" as he was always found helping in various ways, especially in the kitchen.
He volunteered at the Alanon Family Groups office, and served as treasurer of a group for many years. Jerry's proudest accomplishment was donating blood to the American Red Cross. Over the years he gave 78 units - almost TEN gallons! He and his wife travelled extensively with the Syracuse Folksmarch Group.
Jerry is survived by his wife Nancy Eileen Longdon Clausen, son Keith Russell Clausen, daughter Pamela Dawn Clausen, grandson Joseph Andrew Clausen, and sister Jaqueline Jean Clausen Boorman (David) of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, their children and grandchildren. The family expresses sincere gratitude to Dr. Kealy Ham and the staff at Regions Hospital, St. Paul for their loving exceptional care of our "Dad", and to Rev. Ruth Mackenzie of the Minneapolis UU Church for her comforting presence.
A memorial service will be held at First Unitarian Universalist Society of Syracuse, 109 Waring Road, Syracuse, NY 13224 on Saturday, September 15th at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow the service.
