Age 64, of Stillwater, MN and St. Louis, MO died unexpectedly in his Stillwater home due to complications of hypertension. He was taken from us much too soon.
He is survived by his wife, Casey Halikiopoulos; his daughters, Madalene and Catherine Halley; his son, John Halley; his mother, Demetra Halley; his sisters, Sisi Edlund and Cathy Halley (Jenny Carney); his brother George Halley; his aunt, Maria Fadler; his niece and nephew, Ashley and Connor Edlund; and his step-sons, Nigel and Grey Worthington. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Robert Haralambos Halley.
John was born in Portland, Oregon on March 20, 1961, arriving just in time to be deemed his mother's spring robin. As a toddler, John and his sister Sisi lived briefly in Thessaloniki, Greece where his father was born and raised.
When the family returned to the United States, they settled first in Gary, Indiana, then moved to St. Louis, MO in 1969. John lived with his family in Creve Coeur and attended Country Day School where he played football and graduated in 1979. In his spare time, he kept Field and Stream magazine in business with his interest in outdoor activities and nature. He raised quail, kept bees, hunted half-heartedly, and even took up taxidermy for a while.
John graduated from Lake Forest College in 1983, and received his MBA from Washington University in 1986. After a stint in Chicago, he moved to Iowa City, where he developed a love of renovating old houses. John brought these skills with him to Stillwater, Minnesota where he raised his three children in a meticulously restored old house. For several years, he and his daughters took Greek Lessons in St. Paul, Minnesota.
John met his match Casey in 2015 at Polli-Nation in Stillwater. They married in 2019 and changed their last names to the original Greek family name, Halikiopoulos. They loved biking, canoeing, their trips to Montana, Greece, and Iceland, talking about trees, hiking, laughing loudly, cross-country skiing, exploring small towns, and being with each other.
We're devastated that we lost our husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, and friend so young.
