HOUSTON
John (Jack) Douglas
WWII Navy Veteran
Our wonderful dad, grandpa and great-grandpa went to be with our Lord and Savior on January 18, 2018. He is reunited with Peggy, the love of his life, who preceded him to heaven on June 24, 2016. Jack is survived by his adoring daughters Patti Houston (Jim Ellingson) and Lori Houston. He was the best grandpa to Amy Law (Matthew), Abby Zylla (Norman Dupre IV), Jackie, Robbie, and Charlie Ellingson. Jack loved being great-grandpa to little Landon and baby Law on the way. Jack is also survived by his brother Bill and brother-in-law Rodney Skogen and many special nieces, nephews and friends. Jack was born at home on March 20, 1926 in Litchfield, Minnesota. During the summer months Jack and his brothers worked on their uncle's farm in Cannon Falls and he shared a great childhood with his loving family. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy at age 17, Jack fought in many battles in the Pacific on the USS Mississippi. Upon returning from the service, Jack moved to Marine on St. Croix with his family. He met Peggy at the Strand General Store. They were married April 21, 1951 and shared 65 wonderful years together in the home they built near the St. Croix Boom Site. Jack always said, "I lived in the best spot in the whole world!" He could put his boat in the St. Croix River, watch deer in his back yard and spend time in his garden. Jack loved to hunt and fish and shared his love of the great outdoors with his grandchildren. He retired from Andersen Corporation after 36 years. Jack and Peggy volunteered many hours at Trinity Lutheran Church and throughout our community. They enjoyed every swim meet, game and horseshow for their grandchildren. The Minnesota Vikings, Twins and Wild have gained one more fan in heaven. Our sincere gratitude to Lakeview Hospice and the staff at The Gathering. In lieu of memorials, remember Jack with an act of kindness to share in his love for the Lord and spread goodwill. We will always love you and will forever hold you in our hearts. A private service to honor our Dad and Grandpa will be held in the summer.
Fisherman's Prayer
God grant that I may live to fish, until my dying day.
And when it comes to my final cast, I then most humbly pray
When in the Lord's safe landing net and peacefully asleep
That in His mercy I be judged good enough to keep.
Jack lived in the home he loved with the catch of his life.
