Roe, John H. III
Of Sunfish lake, MN and Ovando, Montana. John died early morning July 13, 2009 of a sudden and aggressive lung cancer. He was born on December 21, 1939 in St. Paul. He graduated from St. Paul Academy (and Summit School) in 1958 and went on to graduate from Williams College in 1962 and Harvard Business School in 1964. Playing hockey was a large part of his life in school and college. He began a long career at Bemis Company Inc in 1964, involving numerous positions starting as an extrusion department supervisor in Terre Haute, Indiana and culminating in serving as President and CEO and then Chairman of the Board when the company was headquartered in Minneapolis. He retired in 2003. He also served on the boards of First Trust Company, Andersen Window as lead director and Great Northern Iron Ore Properties. His civic involvements were numerous. He served as Chair of the Board of the Science Museum of Minnesota where he was named a Lifetime Trustee. He led and assisted many organizations in fundraising and capital campaigns. He was a member of the Sunfish Lake City Council for many years. Most recently he served as Vice-Chair of the Montana Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and a Vice-Chair of the Carlton College Board of Trustees. The loves of his life were his wife, Sandra and their three children and their spouses and his five grandchildren. He enjoyed skiing with his family and friends, fly fishing the waters near his ranch in Montana, riding in the mountains and participating in local efforts to preserve the ranching and natural heritage of Blackfoot River Valley. He chose breakfast at the Stray Bullet in Ovando or lunch at the Cheese Table in Minneapolis as a way to connect with a variety of friends. His generosity and his kindnesses and concern for others are well known by his many friends and acquaintances. Preceded in death by his father, John H. Roe Jr. and brother James B. Roe. Survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandra Bemis Roe, sons Kip (Kathleen) and David (Laura), daughter Susan (Josh Glenn), five grandchildren (Haley, Liza and Ella Roe, Sam and Max Glenn), his mother Katharine Angell Roe, brothers Thomas A. and William H. and sister Katharine Cross. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Paul Academy and Summit School, The Science Museum of Minnesota or the Montana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy in Helena, Montana. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 22 at 4 p.m. at ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 60 Kent Street, St. Paul. An additional celebration of John's life will be held in August on Little Blacksmith Ranch in Ovando, Montana.
