John Torgney Jystad, 59, died unexpectedly in his home June 2, 2014 as a result of a stroke.
John was born January 24, 1955 to Torgney and Lyla (Larson) Jystad in Eagle Bend, MN.
John grew up and attended school in Morris and Moorhead, MN until moving with his family to
Ulen, MN; where he graduated from High School in 1973. He studied music at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. In 1975, John enlisted in the Air Force to pursue his career in music, playing the french horn with the band at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He was honorably discharged in 1981, returned to Concordia College and received his BA in music.
John continued to pursue his musical interests performing with various musical groups including St. Olaf College, MacPhail Center for Music and Mindekirken - Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church. He enjoyed studying musical theory, fixing old vehicles, gardening, and, spending time with his nieces and nephews.
John is survived by brothers: Philip (Shelly) and daughters, Maren (Ben) Jystad-Spar and son, Edward; Leah (Dustin) Herrmann, Dana, and Siri; Steven (Susan) and their children, Turi, Torger and Inga; and one sister, Ellen (Bryan) Green and children Matthew (Jessica) Green and children Brody and Addison; Jenna Green and Nickolas Green.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary.
Services will be held June 9, 2014, 11:00 AM at Mindekirken - Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church, 924 E. 21st St., Minneapolis, MN. Burial to follow at Wanamingo Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wanamingo, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Family suggests memorials be given to Mindekirken - Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church.
