Age 94, of Stillwater, MN and Fort Myers Beach, FL , passed away on October 30, 2024.
John was born on December 18, 1929 to John and Rena Leys in Rochester, NY. John graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI with a degree in Chemistry. He was employed as a chemist at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY. He also owned a gas station which led to a life-long passion for automotive repair and restoration. He enjoyed car racing and was one of the original NASCAR drivers. John served in the US Army during the Korean War. He later accepted a position with 3M Company in St. Paul, MN where he enjoyed a successful 30 year career. As a corporate scientist he was recognized for his many contributions to the science of surface analysis and in establishing 3M as a recognized leader in the field. John spent his free time working in the garage restoring vintage cars, especially his favorite, classic Ford Mustangs.
John is survived by his wife, Beth; his children Carol-Ann (Jeff), Lisa (Mark), and John III (Kris); his stepdaughter Tonya; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his former wife Carolyn; and his sister Lorraine.
A private family service was held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
