Age 83, passed away February 6, 2018 in Stillwater, MN. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepmother, and granddaughter, Angela Marie. John is survived by the love of his life, Lenida (Jepson) Sandahl. John and Lenida celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 28, 2017. He is also survived by their children, Teri (Dave) Mathews, Jack (Roxanne), and Jim (Kristina); grandchildren, Leah (Zachary) Jacobson, Andrew and Lukas Mathews, Jacob and Connor Sandahl, and Helena and Julia Sandahl; brother, Jerald Sandahl, and sister, Margaret (David) Thomas; brother-in-law, Len (Linda) Jepson; and three nieces and a nephew. John was born in Moose Lake, MN to parents, John and Ruth (Johnson) Sandahl. His mother died in 1939 and his father married Frances Walters. John graduated from Moose Lake High School and attended the University of Eastern New Mexico on a scholarship for one year, majoring in Petroleum Engineering. He began his 42-year career with MnDot in 1954 working as an engineering aide in Grand Rapids, MN. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1958 with a degree in civil engineering. After sixteen years in various positions in the Road Design Division, he was appointed Assistant District Engineer in the Metro District 9. In 1984, he was promoted to District Engineer for NE Minnesota in Duluth. In 1992, he became Assistant Chief Engineer and Director of Engineering Services, a position he held until his retirement in 1996. John was active in various national engineering organizations, including the Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society (MSES), raising scholarship funds. He was a charter member of the Minnesota Government Engineers Council, serving as President in 1973. John also served several years on the City of Grant Citizens Road Advisory committee. Service Saturday, February 10, 11:00 A.M. at ST. ANDREW'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 900 Stillwater Road, Mahtomedi. Visitation one hour prior.
