Joseph Dominic Larkin passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 9, 2019, in Key West, Florida.
He was born November 29, 1956, to James and Barbara (Schuler) Larkin, the second of thirteen children. After receiving his degree as a flight instructor from the Florida Institute of Technology, he taught aviation for a short period, then returned to school and obtained his B.A. from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He began his second career in the insurance industry, eventually becoming an accredited financial advisor and Vice-President at AdvisorNet Financial in Minneapolis. He traveled frequently to present at industry conferences, training retail agents and advisors in products and protocols. But he purposefully reserved part of his practice for private clients, because he believed in and liked helping people one-to-one, and he wanted to stay in touch with how the industry’s recommendations and products worked in real life.
Joe is survived by his three children, Michael, Reed, and Jenna; granddaughters, Evelyn and Madelyn; fiancé, Bonnie Sedlacek; and siblings, Dan (Christine), Ann (Steve Hansen), Matt (Susan), Tom (Suzi), Mary (Robert Jaffe), Cecelia (Dan Ryan), Cathy (Pete Liska), Eileen (Tim Wilkin), Greg (Ann), John (Denise), Margaret (Mike Ahles), and Andrew (Elizabeth); and 33 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Barb Larkin.
Joe loved people, flying, sailing, water, travel, and sunsets. He helped many people achieve financial security, and he did so honestly and diligently, with patience and integrity. Family was central to his life, and he was always at the center of planning parties and the annual family reunion, and taking anyone who was interested for a boat ride. He especially loved his two granddaughters. He’ll always be fondly remembered for captaining sunset pontoon boat cruises at every opportunity; for the “big picture” advice he gently gave his children, nephews, nieces, and quite a few of his siblings; and for his willingness to lend a hand when someone needed help. Rest in peace, Joe. We hope you’re sailing in heaven.
